Description
These Apple Fritter Rings offer a delightful twist on the classic apple fritter, resembling sweet apple versions of onion rings. They are perfect for fall or any time of year.
Ingredients
- 4 large apples
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk (or 3/4 cup whole milk)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar, for coating
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon, for coating
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with paper towels and set aside.
- Slice apples into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Remove the center core of each slice using a small cookie cutter or apple corer. Pat the apple slices completely dry.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Stir in the beaten egg, vanilla, and buttermilk until just combined and the batter is thick.
- Add about 2 inches of vegetable oil to a large, heavy-bottomed pan. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees F.
- Dip each apple ring into the batter, shaking off any excess.
- Carefully lower 3 to 4 battered apple rings into the hot oil at a time, ensuring they do not touch.
- Fry for about 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Maintain the oil temperature at 350 degrees F between batches.
- Using tongs, transfer the fried apple rings to the paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain.
- Repeat with the remaining apple slices.
- While the apple fritter rings are still warm, coat them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use apples like Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji for a less tart flavor. Granny Smith apples can be used but are tart. Peeling the apples is optional.
- Ensure apple slices are completely dry for the batter to adhere properly.
- Maintain oil temperature at 350 degrees F to prevent burning or undercooking.
- Do not overcrowd the pan when frying to achieve a crispy exterior.
- The batter should be used within 1 hour of preparation as the baking powder’s reaction is short-lived.
- Leftover cooked rings can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in a 350F oven or air fryer until crispy.
