Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s what makes this burger bowl with creamy sauce so irresistible—and some handy substitution ideas:

Burger Meat

  • 1 tbsp olive oil – For sautéing and richness
  • 1 lb lean ground beef – Try turkey or plant-based beef for alternatives
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced – Adds sweetness and depth
  • 2–3 garlic cloves, minced – For bold, aromatic flavor
  • Salt & black pepper – To season the beef

Salad Base

  • 12 oz romaine lettuce – Crisp, fresh texture
  • 1 cup grape tomatoes, halved – Juicy pops of brightness
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion – Adds crunch and spice
  • 1/2 – 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese – Richness; swap with pepper jack for a kick
  • 3/4 cup diced dill pickles – That tangy burger zing

Special Sauce Dressing

  • 2 tbsp light mayo – Base of the creamy dressing

  • 1 tbsp pickle juice – Brightens and balances
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder + garlic powder – Boosts umami

🍽️ Substitutions: Use Greek yogurt instead of mayo for a lighter burger bowl dressing, or swap cheddar for a dairy-free cheese to make this a vegan burger salad bowl.

How to Make the Perfect Burger Salad Bowl (Step-by-Step)

Let’s build this cheeseburger salad bowl recipe like a pro:

1. Cook the Meat

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and garlic, cooking until soft and fragrant—about 5 minutes. Add the ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned and crumbly. Remove from heat and let it rest.

🧠 Science tip: Browning the beef creates Maillard reaction compounds—those delicious crusty flavors we associate with grilled burgers.

2. Make the Special Sauce Dressing

In a small bowl, whisk together mayo, ketchup, pickle juice, onion powder, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper to your liking. This burger salad with secret sauce is all about the dressing.

🥄 Pro tip: Let the sauce sit for 5–10 minutes before serving so the flavors can meld.

3. Assemble the Salad

In a large serving bowl (or meal prep containers), layer the romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, pickles, cheese, and burger meat. Drizzle the special sauce dressing over the top—or serve it on the side.

Pro Tips for Perfect Burger Bowls

### How can I make it dairy-free?

Omit the cheese or use a plant-based version. Swap mayo for vegan mayo or tahini in the sauce.

### Is this keto-friendly?

Yes! Just ensure the ketchup and mayo are low-carb. You can also add bacon or avocado for extra fat.

### What veggies work well as additions?

Avocado, shredded carrots, sautéed mushrooms, or even roasted corn for a smoky twist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I meal prep this in advance?

Yes! Store the meat and dressing separately. Assemble the bowls fresh for each day.

What if I don’t eat beef?

Try ground turkey, chicken, or lentils for a vegetarian burger salad bowl.

Can I freeze it?

Freeze the cooked beef only. Fresh veggies and dressing should be made fresh.

Can I use iceberg instead of romaine?

Absolutely. Romaine offers more nutrients, but iceberg is crisp and classic.

What’s the best pickle for this salad?

Dill pickles are classic, but sweet pickles or bread-and-butter slices can work too.
