Description

Discover the best Dutch oven desserts! From cobblers to cakes, these easy recipes are perfect for campfire or oven baking at home.

Ingredients

For the filling:

6 cups sliced canned or fresh peaches (drained if canned)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for thicker filling)

For the topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup sugar

1 tbsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces

1/2 cup milk (or buttermilk)

Optional: cinnamon sugar for topping

Instructions

  • Prepare Dutch oven:
Lightly grease a 10- or 12-inch Dutch oven with butter or cooking spray.

  • Make the filling:
In a bowl, toss peaches with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Pour mixture into the bottom of the Dutch oven.

  • Make the topping:
In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter until crumbly. Stir in milk to make a sticky dough.

  • Assemble:
Drop spoonfuls of the topping dough over the peach mixture. Don’t worry about covering completely—it’s meant to spread while baking.

  • Cook:

    • For campfire: Place 8–10 hot coals under the Dutch oven and 12–14 on the lid. Cook for 40–45 minutes, rotating occasionally.

    • For oven baking: Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 40–45 minutes or until topping is golden and peaches are bubbling.

  • Serve:
Let cool for 10–15 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Use parchment paper liners in the Dutch oven for easy cleanup.

  • Mix fruits like berries, apples, or cherries with peaches for variety.

  • Make it ahead by prepping dry mix and storing in a zip bag.

  • For crisp topping, sprinkle extra sugar or oats before baking.

  • Dutch oven size matters: Use a 10-inch for a thicker cobbler or 12-inch for a thinner layer.
