Description

Learn how to make delicious homemade Challah Bread with this easy recipe. This Challah Bread is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (105-115F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten, plus 1 egg yolk for egg wash
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  3. Add the foamy yeast mixture, beaten eggs, vegetable oil, and honey to the flour mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal portions.
  7. Roll each portion into a rope about 12 inches long.
  8. Pinch the ends of the ropes together and braid them.
  9. Place the braided Challah Bread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  11. Preheat oven to 375F (190C).
  12. Brush the top of the Challah Bread with the egg yolk wash.
  13. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  14. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving your homemade Challah Bread.
