Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water (105-115F)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten, plus 1 egg yolk for egg wash
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Add the foamy yeast mixture, beaten eggs, vegetable oil, and honey to the flour mixture. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal portions.
- Roll each portion into a rope about 12 inches long.
- Pinch the ends of the ropes together and braid them.
- Place the braided Challah Bread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375F (190C).
- Brush the top of the Challah Bread with the egg yolk wash.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving your homemade Challah Bread.
