  • Total Time: 20-22 minutes
  • Yield: 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

1/2 lb ground beef (80/20 recommended)

1/4 cup finely chopped onions

Salt, black pepper, garlic powder (to taste)

4 slices American cheese or cheddar

2 hero rolls or hoagie buns

1/2 cup shredded lettuce

1 small tomato, sliced thin

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

Optional: ketchup, mustard, hot sauce

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet or flat-top griddle over medium heat.

  • Add ground beef and onions. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

  • Cook the beef while chopping and mixing it with the onions using a spatula.

  • Once fully cooked, shape the meat into two patty-sized mounds and top each with cheese slices.

  • Let the cheese melt over low heat for 1–2 minutes.

  • While cheese is melting, toast the rolls lightly.

  • Spread mayonnaise (and any optional condiments) on the rolls.

  • Layer with chopped beef and cheese, lettuce, tomato, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Toast the bread for a crisp, sturdy base.

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the beef while cooking.

  • Let the sandwich sit wrapped in foil for 1 minute to allow the flavors to settle.

  • Use a meat chopper or spatula edge to get the authentic “chopped” texture.

  • Try different cheeses like provolone or pepper jack for flavor variations.
