Description

A simple and flavorful oven-baked rice dish infused with the savory essence of French onion soup, perfect as a side for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups long-grain white rice, rinsed and drained
  • 2 cans (10.5 oz each) French onion soup
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese (or Muenster cheese)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a 9×13 inch casserole dish, combine the rinsed long-grain rice, French onion soup, beef broth, and melted salted butter. Stir well.
  3. Cover the casserole dish tightly with foil.
  4. Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until the rice is tender and fully cooked.
  5. Remove the foil and fluff the rice with a fork.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyere cheese evenly over the top of the rice.
  7. Return the dish to the oven, uncovered, for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy your oven baked French onion rice.

Notes

  • Ensure you use long-grain white rice. Other rice varieties like instant, brown, jasmine, or basmati will not yield the correct texture.
  • Beef stock or bone broth can be used instead of beef broth. Chicken or vegetable broth are also acceptable alternatives.
  • For lower sodium intake, use unsalted butter and consider salt-free beef broth. You can add a 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt if using unsalted butter.
  • If Gruyere cheese is unavailable or too costly, Muenster, provolone, or mozzarella are excellent substitutes.
  • Rinsing the rice before cooking is crucial to remove excess starch, resulting in fluffier rice. Rinse under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Caramelized onions can be added with the other ingredients for an enhanced flavor profile.
  • Always use canned French onion soup, not the dry seasoning mix, as they are not interchangeable.
