  • Total Time: 50–55 minutes (plus cooling time)
  • Yield: 8-10 slices

Ingredients

Cake:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 cup whole milk

Optional Fillings & Frostings:

Buttercream or cream cheese frosting

Strawberry or raspberry jam

Chocolate ganache

Lemon curd

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a heart-shaped cake pan or prepare one round and one square pan.

  • In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

  • Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Mix in vanilla.

  • Alternate adding flour mixture and milk, mixing until just combined.

  • Pour batter into prepared pan(s) and smooth the top.

  • Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  • Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.

  • Decorate with your choice of frosting, fillings, and toppings.

Notes

  • No heart pan? Use one square and one round cake—cut the round in half and place on two adjacent sides of the square to form a heart.

  • Always let the cake cool completely before frosting to avoid melting.

  • For extra moisture, brush cooled layers with simple syrup.

  • Use an offset spatula and do a crumb coat first for a smooth frosting finish.

  • Personalize with colors, flavors, and decorations to suit your occasion.
